Curiosaty Killed the Cat
What can I say? Muse was amazing. The show in Cincinnati was better, of course, but it was still pretty incredible. Left Thuxoa voicemail during the last song, since they were on their way to the UK and missed it. Muse was over in time to see Interpol on the main stage which was cool as well. (Paul & Deanna were already at our seats and Paul says, "You got here in time for the good stuff." Yeah, but he missed Muse.)

And then there was The Cure. Robert's not as young and svelte as he used to be, but the man is still hot. The lighting for the first song sealed the deal for me... especially the twinkly lights during the windchimes. Sadly, they didn't play "Friday I'm in Love". I was going to start a riot if they didn't play "Lovesong", which luckily was the first song of the encore.

Concert Rules Question
I'm not sure... but I think you're still not allowed to wear the shirt of the band you are going to see even if it is a 15-year-old, thin & fading, concert tour t-shirt, right? Or does that make you cool for seeing them the first time around?

Get Thee Behind Me
I was gone to a meeting all day yesterday. I haven't checked my voicemail since last Friday. I'm behind.

1) Of everything in your wardrobe what do you feel the most comfortable wearing? Why? My long homemade skirts and t-shirts. Extreme comfort.

2) How would you describe your style? Eclectic perhaps. I can vary from hippy skirts to vintage polyester to classic MaryJanes and pearls. It's a mood thing.

3) How many pairs of shoes do you own and do you wear them all? I'm a girl. I buy shoes. In fact, I just bought three pairs of shoes last week. I wear them when I think about them.

4) Where do you buy most of your clothes? I don't know that I could really say, seeing as I hate to shop and don't really have a store that's "mine". Any place with clothes made for long legs.

5) What was the last piece of clothing you bought? I bought three knee-length skirts while I was at home.

My Peeps
I've read a lot about people's friends in the last couple of days, and I decided this morning that I miss having a posse. I went for years and years having identity through the group that I was in. The end of high school was the Cory-Nate-Danielle 3 Musketeers Posse. At college Nate got switched for Matthew. Then there was the whole ARC gang. And then we had the Dysfunctional Seven that lived at The Fold + The Newlyweds. And then the redletterpeople with the broadies and groadies. There was even a sort of posse here when Jay was still around.

Maybe it has to do with age. Maybe it just has to do with the people I presently know. But it just seems like I don't have a group. I have some singles and a few doubles... but rarely do those intermingle.

I know too many single travelers and too many married people who don't have fun anymore. That's it. :)

Thank the Lord Michael Crawford is Too Old
I was really skeptical about putting Phantom on film again. That story holds such a special piece of my heart because of the people who sparked my interest in it, and I didn't want them to mess it up. But after seeing the trailer, I think it looks pretty amazing. Looks like the only thing that could blow it is bad vocals.

Random Tidbits
  • I put my belt on backwards. Today the buckle is on the right.
  • My nails are a heinous shade of pink.
  • I'm wearing two different trouser socks. I like to think I'm making a statement.

Southern Living
Look at me... I made fried okra for lunch. Homegrown in Dr. RoseAnne's garden. I don't know if I made it right, but it tasted okay.

That one I'm proud of... but I'm not so proud that I almost said "all y'all" in conversation the other day. It's all downhill from here.

5. Do you have a paper weight on your desk? I used to have a 12-inch pirate hook on the corner.

Iowa Trip Recap: Day 3 (Sunday)
  • Made a spectacle by parading all 67 of us into church at once.
  • Coffee & cookies (grandma's recipe) back at the barn and took family pictures
  • After lunch went to visit with my Grandma who is awesome
  • Went home and washed my hair, and then got my haircut by my aunt when I got back
  • Dinner, then a small church service put on by my uncles, and then a bonfire with s'mores and goodbyes

Random Tidbit
I ate Pringles this afternoon, and now the roof of my mouth is raw.

Random Act of Kindness
I happened to be at Kroger when the Thunderstorm of the Century blew over. Several of us stood under the overhang wondering if it was ever going to let up enough to let us dodge to our cars. It wasn't the getting-wet part that worried me so much as the pushing-a-large-hunk-of-metal-while-running-through-ankle-deep-water part considering the outrageous lightning quite nearby.

An elderly gentleman had apparently made it out to his car with an umbrella and drove up to the door to retrieve his groceries. I tapped on the passenger window and pointed to the cart indicating that I would put his groceries inside if he wished. No point in him getting out again.

He moved the items off the passenger seat, and I put his four plastic bags of mostly produce and a carton of milk in the mini-van. He asked if he could give me a ride to my car. I said I could wait until the rain stopped. He offered to leave his umbrella with me. I declined and wished him a nice afternoon.

I just love old people.

Goal for the Weekend
See Napoleon Dynamite. My sources say that the theatre at Green Hills has added the secret additional footage way after the end of the closing credits, so stick around.

Did I mention that tonight I start house/petsitting just a block from my office? How much will this rock? Considerably. They have a pool and a baby grand. Not that I really swim... but I do play.

Iowa Trip Recap: Day 2 (Saturday)
  • Had to be at "the barn" by 9:00... in the morning... for opening ceremonies and breakfast.
  • Cousin Meredith and 1st-cousin-once-removed (1cor) Amy entertained with mixers, including the nontraditional double-elimination thumb wrestling tournament
  • Lots of mingling and chit-chatting.
  • After lunch a large group of men went golfing while most of the ladies took the youngins to the aquatic center
  • Cousin Amy had a great craft idea once the kids got back... they filled pieplates with wet cement and we decorated them with marbles and beads and shells to make stepping stones (even the adults made them)
  • After pizza for dinner, we had the Silly Milly and Farmer Bob talent show

Long as God Can Grow It, My Hair

Locks
of
Love

10 inches of slightly curly red hair will be sent tomorrow. Two time donor. Joining the 2004 Locks of Love Cut Club along side of these lovely ladies: Connie & her mom, Manda, Teresa, Laura, Christy, Heather, Rachel, & Kate.

The end result was quite flippy, but it'll tone down once it gets over the shock of being short again.

Grilled Cheesiness
Last week Matt asked the question:

What is the best way to make a grilled cheese sandwich?

There has been a range of cheeses that are globally acceptable. There are the snackmasters vs. the frying pans. But there is a new question raised... does anyone not do the diagonal cut?

Dramamine is for Wimps
And I'm a wimp. I'm normally a champion flyer. I dig it. But yesterday I wanted to shoot myself if only I could have gotten a handgun past security.

Due to noise ordinances in Chicago, they (as my father says) fly you in real high and drop you like a rock once you get to the airport. Which can be fun, unless that rock-dropping sensation also comes when you are flying through a giant thundercloud. *yak* I got really headachy and seriously considered renting a car to drive the rest of the way before reality set in.

Iowa Trip Recap: Day 1 (Friday)
  • 5:00am - packed and out the door
  • In Omaha (somewhere in middle America) by 10:30am
  • Rent car and drive to sister's house by 1:30pm
  • Hung out with the kids, played Magical Racing Tour with Bradley who was surprised I knew how to play (little does he know how much of my college career was spent playing MarioKart), exhaustion set in
  • Had Pizza Ranch, the only pizza I actually look forward to, for dinner with Ang's fam and the parents
  • Ran to "the farm" for last minute reunion preparations
  • Saw family members at nearby hotel, so stood outside chit-chatting with the MN cousins and the CO cousins until dark.

(The haircut didn't happen until Sunday, so you'll just have to wait.) :)

We Remember
Having grown up in Iowa, this probably meant more to me... but Monday was the 15th anniversary of the crash of Flight 232. I can remember it like it was yesterday.

The most vivid image was turned into a statue. The picture of Colonel Dennis Nielsen carrying a child away from the wreckage.

"God saved the child. I just carried him, sir."

All Vanity Aside
So I told Manda that I had my passport picture made tonight for the second time. And as per usual, I found the first set only after having paid another $15 for a new set. She suggested I have a poll for which one to use. I think the answer is obvious. The one set I can't believe I left the house much less felt compelled to have my photo taken.

I also would like to add that I don't photograph well. And the photographer both times was shorter than me, so there's all that extra chin involved. The flash is so bright, so to avoid half-closed eyes I over compensated with the deer-in-headlights look. And why do they insist on trying to make you smile? Only one succeeded.

You decide. Choose wisely.
(I can't believe I'm doing this.)

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Remind Me to Never Not Go Again
I debated about going to the show.
Had to let out the dog.
Had to stop at the bank.
Was going to be late.
Wasn't sure my car would survive the trip all the way to rcktwn.
It was hot and gross outside thus making me hot and gross.

I almost didn't go.

But I needed to go see John & Gene... which is always a pick-me-up.

However I turned a corner downstairs and ran into another familiar face.

Matty-D.

His band was playing there as well. And it was incredible catching up with him. It's been almost four years since we all lived together in that little house in Indy. I met his beautiful wife, and his adorable son fell asleep in my arms during their set.

I truly needed this night of being around people who know me.

Tyler is doing movies and theatre in L.A. He was a good guy. Always a blast at cast parties. What I find funny, and only I will probably find this funny, is that he now goes by "Ty"... when my friend and I actually used to call him "Ler". We had a symbol for it and everything. —| (If those two lines were connected, that would be a ler. Like a tipped over "T".) Moving on...

Brown
Another random search for something that escapes me now brought me to ilovebenbrown.com. I'm left with these thoughts...
1. Who is ben brown? (besides this)
2. Why do all these people love him?
3. Why don't I love him?
4. Do I love him?
5. What can brown do for me? (hello!)

Curiosaties
Spoke to Darren yesterday about my spare $100-worth of Curiosa Festival tickets. He and Paul have lawn seats but may give those to Jonathan and Adam in order to have better under-the-canopy seats. That will be fun.

Remember back when previews were part of the excitement of going to movies? Did you know that they play that annoying Fanta ad before movies these days? Not that I was a big Fanta drinker before, but I now refuse to ever let a drop of Fanta pass my lips -- just out of principle.

And because it's Friday... go play Goldminer.

A. No sleep.

Q. Why haven't you been sleeping, Danielle?
A. Dog.

I understand that my life is somehow less meaningful because I was deprived of having a pet when I was a child... but dang. Pets are freaking noisy in the middle of the night. I love this dog -- don't get me wrong... but I don't particularly enjoy lying in bed listening to the slobbery moist echo of her licking her paws or the floor or whatever it is she's licking at 3:00 in the morning.

Eureka!
So I've been house/dogsitting while Karl's family has been away this week. The other night after my parents had gone it dawned on me that I have a perfectly tuned piano at my disposal and hadn't even sat down at it. Alas they had no music there, and my memerized repertoire is dwindling as the years pass... but I did find The Mutopia Project which is a collection of many public-domain classical works. Whee! If my piano teacher could see me now!

Some old favourites I can still play...
Musette - J.S. Bach
Sonata No. 14 - 2nd Movement - L.v. Beethoven
Ballade - J.F.F. Burgmuller
Sonatina - M. Clementi
Rondo Alla Turca - W.A. Mozart

Rock the Vote
Heather conveniently linked to a place where you can organize your stuff to apply for an absentee ballot online. They might be harvesting my social security number and vital information, but at least I don't have to worry about that letter I started last week anymore.

One night a Swiffer commercial came on and we had this exchange without missing a beat...
Dad: Who originally sang this song?
Me: Devo.
Dad: And what is the song called?
Me: "Whip It".
Dad: That's my girl.
